St. Francis Xavier’s Academy
Located at: 751 N. State Street, Chicago
(A brief history and Tour of the Cathedral. www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-CRVxLDkKg&feature=youtu.be)
Disclaimer: We don’t care what religion you are in or out of character. This game’s purpose is not to beat some form of Christianity in your head. We chose this location for both it’s humor (St Xavier humors us… we are a simple, simple people…) and because these people take in homeless and are amazingly servant hearted- regardless of their reasons for it. Plus, the church (surprisingly) does try to be you know… a force for good.. as opposed to evil. This place also has a school (Okay so it’s a “middle” school, for us we’re going to make it something closer to Xavier’s school back in Marvel-land) which makes it symbolic as a place of education.
AGAIN. This is not some badly propped up attempt to make people Christians. If it was, I’d do my brand of christianity not Catholicism of which I honestly can say I know very little about. (So there!) But that doesn’t mean you get to be a closed minded biggot who can’t even take 4 seconds to realize this is more about the history of the people and cultures- as well as the great fire of chicago- (the video has some great pictures of the horror that fire was!)… If I can keep my mind open to invite everyone of all religions, creeds or anti religions into my game, you can suffer to do the same. (After all did I not say in the rules this is a mature human game? I will be featuring plenty of other religion sides too… just like Marvel…)
(I’m leaving the church alone by the way, the pictures on their website: www.holynamecathedral.org/ are beautiful and speak for themselves..)
The Academy
Originally a middle school, the Church recently relocated that location elsewhere and have made room for “something greater.” When questioned, the priests who live in the rectory against the cathedral will happily respond that the Cardinal had a vision from God that prompted them to prepare the school for wayfairers who were going to be needing some place to stay. Father George is the contact between church and Academy for any needs or concerns that may come in contact with. (For the points of “roleplaying” this is “sacred” ground and demons and other unholy critters are going to be very sad… Yeah that means vampires too..)
The Academy is made up of 3 main buildings, the Gym and the Greenhouse.
Building A:
This building is six stories tall with entrances to the both streets it borders, an exit toward the cathedral and an interlocking/covered passage between Building A and B. The first floor is mostly offices and a large main multipurpose room that can be used for theater, or staged productions including a backroom for sets. The second floor contains storage for the entire school and the rest of the theater room (it is about 2 stories tall with rafters and beams and such for productions and lighting.) The Third floor is heavily sound proofed from the floor and contains the beginning of the classrooms which cover the third through sixth floors. Each floor has 5 classrooms about 20’ x 40. They are equipped with chalkboards, desks and chairs sized for adults though some rooms have smaller desks for children shoved into corners. The Attic space contains a large “floor” sized room empty of all but a few empty bookshelves and a few beanbag chairs. The Basement contains the boiler, and mixed up storage of the middle schools left behinds- such as mix matched chairs, old, rickety desks, etc. Each floor has a men and women’s bathroom (except the second, Basement and Attic floors.) Staircases are located in the four corners of the school, giving access to all floors and the roof. The boiler room however is locked, as are some of the offices.
Building B contains the living quarters of the school. We’ll come back to the first floor in a second…
The Second Floor contains converted classrooms into bedrooms. The rooms tend to be 20’ x 40’ feet in size and contain no closets to speak of. There is no furniture in any classroom until the fourth floor, where there are beds, dressers, old fashioned trunks and a collection of random furniture that looks to have been donated from a variety of sources. There is probably no limit to the fourth floors availability to different types of furniture, including lamps. These are cluttered in the six classroom like rooms on the fourth floor. The third, Fifth and Sixth floors are all open for bedrooms.
The “Attic” space is split into three “classroom” sized rooms, with a narrow hallway to navigate into them. Only the north and south staircases go up into the attic (and the roof) the other staircases only go up to the sixth floor.
The Basement contains the boiler room (locked) and a storage area with more desks, chairs and the missing chalkboards from upstairs... other random school equipment is down here as well, like old chalk boxes with stubs of chalk, erasers, counting cubes...etc.
The first floor only has four doors leading to the outside. The first door opens from a covered patio between buildings a and b. This door leads into a large “parlor” or living area. This “living” area has a large tv screen, a stereo, some older gaming systems and some couches piled up to the east side. The west side has tables and areas for eating, including a window that shows the kitchen is not far from this particular area. Indeed this entire area is Ms Baele’s new territory and she rules it with an iron fist. Ms Baele (6’9”, “large”, overweight- looks like the Witch of the Waste from Howls Moving Castle) believes that the tv should “remain a decent volume” and that childred (read anyone smaller then her) need to be properly fed. She won’t tolerate fighting and will wade into the thick of things if something starts. (That’s all out of character knowledge, I have no doubt your characters will test it.. on accident..) The kitchen’s large “window” does have shutters, allowing if she chooses, to close off her domain. There are two staircases in this room, at either corner. Like the school next door, these provide access to the floors above. The one in the east corner actually goes up to the attic and roof, the other only goes to the sixth floor. (This is mirrored again on the other floors.)
The Kitchen itself is pretty impressive with lots of counter space, two large restaurant like ovens and a 12 range stove. There’s a small table with about six stools that can be pulled up either to the table, or to the counters for those who want to sit and talk- and no doubt, be “pulled” into helping with the production of feeding so many people in the academy’s walls. The Kitchen is bordered by a long, 5 foot wide hallway down the west side. This hallway provides people the ability to stay out of the kitchen and out of the wide, wide arms of Mrs. Baele.
The front office usually is empty but for the chair, the telephone and a few bookcases and receptionist chairs from when the building was used as a school. The office has two doors, one goes toward what used to be the principals office – This has been claimed by Mr Baele as his “workspace.” A doorway, a rather large doorway- with no door- has been… created.. into the back portion of what used to be an office space at the back of the infirmary. This is now the Baele’s bedroom- and truly only the bravest enter this territory.
The Infirmary has two doors, one from inside the front office, and one from the hallway that borders the kitchen. There is a phone, as well as a pager number of the doctor on call. This is Hiko, sometime Doctor, sometime gardener and all around meddler. He’s one of the recent entries too- and has a small healing gift- able to heal wounds with his force of will alone. Mostly though he uses the more traditional means of medicine- foul tasting potions and needles- encouraging his patients to stay healthy in the most fun of ways!
The Hallway opens up into three other doors before “T”-ing off at the end of the hall to two large bathrooms, facing them the left is the mens’ room and the right is the Ladies room. These are common bathrooms and also have showers… It’s obvious these were rigged as an afterthought and not apart of the original building. The last two doors are large, empty spaces that are a little larger then the classrooms above. The last is a nice sized, long, laundry room with washing machines and dryers… Please do note however these are older machines- and may.. or may not.. turn your clothes grayish in hue… or break… leaving wet clothes… Just glancing at them suggests this. The piping is also..er.. questionable (like the rest of the “House”)
Building C is closed up and locked up and the windows tightly shuttered… what this place holds, stores or otherwise contains is a mystery… It appears to be a bit smaller then the other two buildings, about the same outside as the other buildings and built about the same time period.
The Gym is a large, well.. Gym.. there’s no exercise equipment but there are old mats that can be spread on the floor for taking a tumble and some old gym equipment in the back room, like mostly inflated soccer balls and the like.
The Greenhouse is overflowing with various flora and fauna and acts as both a “kitchen garden” as well as a flower garden in the cool winter months.
