Character Creation “Guide”
The First character sheet guide is Whistle, an Original Character. The Second character is based on a Marvel Character, Madam Web, to show ideas on conversion. You can also check out the other accepted CS's in the accepted profile list.
The first copy (This one) is only the information you'd "see" on a normal application. The second "Version" has all the notes and information that went into building her, as well as information ideas. The "red" parts are all the same- or marked with green which means it was a revision after the rest of the staff looked at her and asked for clarification and changes.

Whistle
---
Full Name: Lilliana Rosemary Van Bergen
Codename Whistle
Nicknames: Whistle, Whis, Fish, Squeakers
Whistle, she gets her nickname from her flute and pan pipes playing. She hates talking, so she often uses music to communicate for her. She loves to swim, so her older brother started calling her Fish- since they couldn’t pull her out of the family pool long enough to eat sometimes. Squeakers is because when she talks, she has a high, breathy voice…
Gender: Female
Age: 12
---
PHYSICALS:
Height: 4’6”
Weight: 85 lbs
Hair Color:light brown
Eye Color:light brown
Scars, Birthmarks, Tattoos or other identifying marks: Whistle has a small strawberry colored birthmark that covers the majority of her midriff and it looks somewhat like a fish. It is approximately 3 inches long by 2 inches. She also has a scar on her left knee, left side, that runs 2 inches by 1/2 inch with little stitch mark scars on either side from a wound from bike riding when she was younger.
Any other important things to note about the physical character:
Whistle has a slight, swimmers build. She’s well muscled from all her time in the pool and she faintly smells of chlorine or sea water, depending on what water body she’s been spending time in. There’s always a sort of briny smell that she can’t get rid of- or perhaps, simply no longer notices.
Physical Skills:
Athletic 3: Whistle swims, a lot, and it has gone a long way to keep her fit with a lot of stamina.
Boat Handling 3: Whistles father is a boat mechanic, and he has taken all his children out on the boats since they were but babes. She knows her way around a boat and how to maintain most of them including minor repairs.
Cooking 2: Whistle has been cooking and taking care of herself and her family since she learned two slices of bread, some jelly and butter made a sandwich. While her "recipe" list has grown, she's not a professional by any means. She can, however, cook full meals and not burn them!
Fishing 2: Whistle was raised on a pier, she knows how to fish in a variety of ways and is very practiced but no where near an expert.
Singing 3: Whistle can hold a tune and her aunt's been training her for a few years on how to improve her voice. She has an incredible (mutant oriented) range that helps support her voice. And to "speak in human tones" often Whistle is "singing"- has her "natural" feel for where a voice shoudl be speaking at tends to hurt people's ears... She only recently learned this trick.
Swimming 4: This is one of Whistle's true passions in life. Swimming is part of everything she is and who she is. She loves water and loves swimming and would live in the water if her family would have let her! Please note, this is a four only because of her age. She may get to a five, and probably will if she survives long enough, but she's just not got enough experience to be a world class swimmer yet.
Physical Weaknesses (if Any):
Clumsy: Whistle tends to be pretty clumsy on land, lacking coordination or balance when running and often bumps into things when in a hurry. This is due to the fact she’s used to being in water where there is less gravity pull. In water, Whistle is not clumsy at all!
Short: Due to age, or genetics, Whistle is pretty small and tiny compared to most humans at 4'8". She may grow (over time) to become taller, but as it is, she has to "look up" to a lot of people and a lot of peopel think of her as much younger then she is.. (are you 10 sweetie?)
SOCIALS:
From Marvel (Canon), if so, What “World” or Comic, or Storyarch if possible? Nope, Original character!
Nationality, Religion, feelings about religion:
Whistle is American, born on the west coast in Seattle, Washington. She is a pagan, or a witch if you ask her and she bothers responding. She worships Poseidon, and respects the animals of the ocean and seas. She is pretty tolerant of religions not hers, but tends to get a bit annoyed when people try to tell her she’s wrong. It’s her beliefs, after all! Not theirs! They can believe what they want as long as they leave her to hers.
Languages Spoken:
English, German, highschool French, and can communicate with Dogs, Dolphins, and Whales with her voice.
Class in Society, Education:
Her family are middle- to-low- class german-americans, she attended a public school up through 7th grade.
Occupation: B Student, part time life guard.
Family Details:
Whistle is the fifth child of Herbert (Herb) and Mirabelle (Belle). Herb is a mechanic who works on boats and ships in the harbor of Seattle. Belle works as an elementary school teacher. Whistle was mostly raised in the herd of children- and as one of the smallest, but not youngest, children (there were six of them!) It gave Whistle perhaps more freedom then many of the children of her age. By the age of seven she was making her own food and taking herself to and from school and in and out of the pool. When her big sister found her, age nine, floating in the pool sleeping, her “free” days came to an abrupt end. Oh, Whistle was fine, turns out she was a mutant with the ability to breath underwater... The entire event however scared her parents and they forced her to take after school music lessons with Aunt Marge. Her parents ignore the whole “mutant” thing- she looks normal enough... Whistle’s already some what shy and doesn’t talk much so few notice there is anything “wrong” with her. Her brothers and sisters, who also run wild in the streets of Seattle like Whistle, and find her mutation more amusing then scary or odd. Her eldest brother, Herb three (he’s the third Herb, her Dad was a Jr.) recently punched a highschooler for making fun of her squeaking noises from crying... but that as a mostly isolated incident.
- Herb (Jr)- Dad, Mechanic, works freelance in the Seattle Harbor. (Mutant)
- Belle - Mom, elemenetry school teacher, Seattle school district.
- Herb Three- Eldest brother, First born. Protective. 18 (Mutant: Ice powers)
- Angelica- Eldest Sister, part mother, part big sister. Angelica is blond, sweetfaced and a cheerleader at her high school. 16 (Mutant: Singing)
- Crystal and June- Twin sisters, 14, obsessed with the latest boyband and getting into cheerleading. Use Whistle for their performances as “live music accompaniment.”
- Tora- Youngest brother, baby of the family, 6 years old. Tora is small, ferocious and cunning, often getting into more trouble than the entire family can pull him out of. Even at six, shows a knack for mechanics that even his father can’t top. (Mutant: Mechanical Wiggles)
- Aunt Marge, music school teacher, freelance, looking to capitalize on Whistle’s natural musical talent...
Additional Social Information:
Whistle wants to be a marine biologist. She just... happens to suck at math... oh and the whole idea of ‘blood’ thing kind of makes her woozy. She also wants to help the family get everyone to college. She’s working on a swimming competition scholarship to get into a good college somewhere!
Social Skills:
Musical Performance 4: (This could of gone under physicals too. I put it under social because there's a bit of "acting" and "theatrics" involved with performing talents. ) Whistle has the ability and knowledge on how to play many musical instruments, including the Piano, Flute and panpipes (her favorite.) She can't play stringed instruments that require plucking due to her fingers being to "soft" and "tender" from her love affair with water. She simply can't get the callouses needed to play them properly.
Empathy 2: Whistle's always had a knack for "reading" peoples emotions, in fact, this "stat" should be much higher then it is currently listed... except she's recently hurt someone with her mutant gift of empathy so she's not "reading" it as well as she could.
Subterfuge 2: A youth of childish lies and coverups for her mutant gifts and scrapes with her older brother has given Whistle a "practiced" air with lying. While she's not anywhere close to a master at the craft of lying, she is pretty good at side stepping the truth and not looking too guilty while she does it!
Social Weaknesses (if Any):
Naive: There's something "innocent" and "sophistication" around Whistle. She doesn't smack of authority in anyway. In fact, hearing her give any sort of "order" would probably be met in a huge round of laughter..
Shy: Because of her voice tending to be on the squeaker levels, and because of her need to keep the secret of her ... particular gifts... Whistle has never gotten very good at social events or people gathering. She hates to speak out loud in public in small groups and the idea of a large group is down right terror filling... However this "shy" only covers her public speaking terror. She actually loves people and being among them as "one of the crowd" and she can sing- happily- in choirs. She just detests it when people look upon her and single her out!
Obnoxious: While Whistle has kind of figured out how to talk in a "soprano" voice, her voice can be on the side of annoying in high pitched tones. Her solution? Don't talk. That doesn't mean that this won't come out if say, she starts to talk- her voice is higher pitched and that can be like nails on a chalkboard for people who enjoy more mellow voices.
MENTALS:
Personality:
"ISFP"
Whistle is very much a "in the moment" girl. She's unbridled by society, indeed, most of the time she lives by her own sort of "code of honor." She feels apart of society and yet, unique, and she's really okay with that. She values mercy and justice and often extends that to her adventures out in the world- even at her young age- and will not understand it if people don't also always act toward mercy and justice. (For her, the two concepts are not different.) She is very "selfless" in nature and often would give people the shirt off her back if they wanted it. Perhaps because of that, she has periods of isolation where she "recharges" her energy and can be cranky if these "alone" periods are interrupted by humans.
Whistle is very much into the doing of a thing, not a thinking about a thing. She can be very impulsive and, at a times, impatient to get from point a to point b without keeping all that much of an eye on the consequences of the thing. She does have, usually, a strong common sense with a good gut instinct that usually means her chosen direction is a good one- even if it is a bit impulsive and may not make sense to others around her. Indeed, verbal communication is something of a struggle for her and she often can't communicate her ideas when she 'does' try to explain them to people (read: adults) around her.
Fears and Phobias:
Whistle hates the idea of giving up apart of herself to someone else in more then a friendly way. She's seen what love can do to people (her big sisters are wonderful, yet stupid examples of this!) The idea of being a love struck puppy incapable of thought just turns her stomach... She's pretty sure boys her age do have cooties.
Whistle's also afraid of both going home- and staying. In this new world she's going to have a bunch of freedoms she just didn't have at home- with the added addition that people HERE don't think she's a freak- assuming she gets with Maeve and her company and isn't hijacked on the way by other player characters... On the other hand, part of her misses her mother, her father and her siblings very much. She's very conflicted about it- and that means she rarely, if ever, attempts to think about it. In fact, she might get hostile if people try to bring it up!
Finally Whistle's actually got this whole thing about 'not' being in water. She "requires" to be in water for an extended period of time (2+ hours) every day or she starts to suffer. This is completely "mental" as she physically (as of yet) suffers no "true" damage to not being without water. However, Whistle associates water as her true environment. The loss of her "true environment" makes her cranky, and complainy. She will also complain about the "dry" conditions, and start to "scratch/itch" her skin complaining of dryiness. She can do damage to herself- over an extended period of time (1 week) with this psychosis. And while some things, such as a bath or rain, will take some of the pressure off... well... It's a mental thing...
Mental Skills / Knowledges
Academics 1: Whistle was pretty good in school, but her education "knowledge" is about mid-eighth grade with a A/B average. (You'd have an A/B average if your parents threatened YOUR pool time too!)
Animals & Training 3: Whistle has a natural gift communicating with Dogs, Whales and Dolphins. She's recently discovered she might be able to extend that to birds. Most animals though seem to enjoy her presence even if her communication with them is limited with her mutant gift.
Occult 1: Whistle has an incredible passion for the old greek myths and mythos.
Scan 2: The Ocean can be as beautiful as it can be dangerous. Whistle has developed the ability and practice to notice small details and changes in her environment- specifically while in or near the water (such as on a boat). However, she has to be "focusing" which typically means only near or on the water. Otherwise she tends to be day-dreamy.
Science 2: The Ocean (Oceanography) and Marine Biology are two of Whistle's passions. While she's in no way an expert, she does a lot of "outside" research from school that gifts her a "beginning college" level knowledge on the subjects- but only on these two subjects.
Search 2: Both as a product of her love of the ocean, a youth of beachcombing for treasures that wash up on the shores and beaches of the Washington/ Seattle area, as well as being one of six children- has given Whistle the ability and knack for finding lost things or things hidden in places unsuspecting... You know, when she's focused and looking.
Mental Weaknesses (if Any):
Forgetful: Whistle tends to forget things that aren't.. well.. important.. Food? Food's important. Water's important. Remember to go to Aunt Marge's house for music lessons and school and homework? IMPORTANT. Why? Because if she doesn't do it, she can't swim...
Remembering that Herb three told her to pick up milk and eggs on the way home? Or that her mother told her to pick up her room? Or that she swore to the beach combers society that she'd show up on Saturday morning to help clean up the south beach? Yeah.. Maybe she'll remember.. maybe she won't..
Names? Addresses? Those things will probably be forgotten almost instantly if they aren't critically important to her survival or places where she can get something important to her survival. She's pretty bad at remembering faces too- unless again, they make a point of becoming something important to water, survival, or whatever.
Oblivious on Land: For how smart and sharp she is near or in the water, Whistles pretty freaking hopeless on land. She day dreams, she doesn't "connect" with people or reality... It's not that unusual to see her klutz out over something obvious like a curb in a parking lot... or run right into a wall or closed door because she wasn't paying attention. It's worse if she's trying to talk and do something else at the same time- as both take concentration.
Impatient when on Land: Again with the whole at sea/ocean/in large bodies of water, she seems to calm down and be patient. But On land, Whistle tends to be much more impatient- perhaps because most of the time in her life thus far has always been with the goal "when do I get to go swimming again, and all this stuff is otherwise worthless." She can, like other things, put aside the impatience it if's something she feels is... worth it... Like studying science or greek myths.. otherwise it's a torture that can take 'forever!'
SUPERNATURAL/XGENE POWERS
Theme or overarching Idea: Water Witch/ Animal Speaker
Beginning Mutations:
Water Breathing - Ability to breathe in water: Whistle has developed a special function in her lungs that allows her to "breathe" in water and exhale it just like normal air above ground.
Animal Speech*- Ability to speak to animals/ hear high pitched sounds out of the range of humans. This usually only applies to dolphins, whales and other creatures of the ocean who speak in songs, clacks and whistles, however, Whistle has also figured out she can communicate with Dogs in similar ways. She can tune her voice to speak above human levels of hearing, and below them, giving her incredible octave ranges. She has started to be able to hear and understand birds, but it is very much a new "aspect" of her talent and not one more developed. [Dolphins, Whales, Dogs, Birds]
Minor Empathy- Whistle can "push out" her feelings toward others on a very minor level, usually invoking her voice or her music to channel the empathy. Sometimes she can pick up very strong emotions that are near her, but for the most part she's limited in sharing 'her' emotions. This is a "minor" gift, so the sharing can't "force" anyone's emotions to change. She can "influence" emotions... such as when playing a calming song on her pipes, lull people into a calmer-state... However, if someone's really agitated, or angry, then the song isn't going to have very much (if any) effect. (A drop of water toward a tidal wave if you will..)
Water Control- Of all her gifts, this is perhaps the most strong, however it also is limited to bodies of "pure" water. Whistle can "bend" water to her will (below are a few examples.)
- Manipulating water to move or change shape.
- Creating waves or splashes of water
- Creating bubbles of air (by sealing the "bubble" with a constant flow of water, thus trapping the air inside...)
Whistle however can NOT do the following:
- Create water
- Destroy water (make it vanish)
- Manipulate water in all substances: She can manipulate water in non living things, such as soda, water, wine, acid, or other liquids. However she can't not manipulate water in living things, such as people or plants.
How the mutations will grow and develop potentially down the road:
There's a few "natural" ways for her powers to potentially progress as she gets older/more experience with her powers... Her ability to communicate and learn other animals patterns of speech and communication. Her water powers developing to either create water or manipulate temperature of it by speeding up it's molecules... or even to manipulate it in living substances...
Drawbacks of the Mutations, Weakness or ties in to other “problems” listed above and how that equals out what you have to begin with:
Whistle is very clumsy on land. She has a hard time communication with words and verbal explanations- specially when it's important- because she has a hard time remembering she's one of the land people too, even with her family. She has a psychosis that if she spends too much time out of water that she'll dry up and become- well- nothing, which in a way is worse then death for her.
Her empathy gift is partially blocked by her own fears of feeling what other people are feeling so she has a hard time "pushing" out her own emotions. In fact, it's pretty impossible for her to do it without music- as music helps her "relax" enough to push out her own emotions... It also in a large way, limits the emotions she can "push" to other people to calming, relaxing, sleepy, happy emotions.
Water manipulation is great, unless you have no water to manipulate. Whistle can not pull water from pipes, or out of the air itself. She's limited to clear-visible- sources of water. She can not multiply the source of water... if the Only "water" in the area to fight someone with is a can of half drunk soda, she's very limited to a "splash" in the face of distraction while she runs the hell away toward something with a bit more.. substance...

HISTORY OF THE CHARACTER:
Whistle is the fifth child of Herbert (Herb) and Mirabelle (Belle) Van Bergan.
For example, when she was ten and Herb Three was a freshman in high school, one of her eldest sister's many boyfriends was teasing her for the way she sounds when she talks- high and somewhat breathless. Like she's always on a helium balloon. Herb Three watched her face plummet and knew how hard it was for her to talk at all... He went right up to the guy and punched him in the nose! Broke it! Her sister was morifed, her parents were angry- and the guy sued Herb Three for damages and assault on his nose.
Herb Three insisted that the three thousand bucks he had to give out over the course of the next year working a pizza route and news paper boy route- not to mention working side by side by Papa Herb, were well worth the satisifaction of no one teasing His little sister over her voice and her gifts.
In a way her "gifts" were just that to her family. Oh, they weren't to be shared, and they were very secret, but they were also a pleasure and enjoyment. There were a few scary moments, like everytime she'd discover something new... The worst one to date was the reason why she was even 'out' when that "thing" grabbed her and dumped her in Eden without so much as a by your leave.
She had been fighting with her Dad to go out with Herb Three on the boat. She had wanted to go out to see the Gray whales, journeying over the coast to their migratory grounds. She could "hear" them singing from the harbor- inviting her to come play with their massive hides and swim with them. Her father of course was scared shitless of the very idea of her swimming with the huge behemoths of whale out in the ocean. But Whistle had wanted it, and wanted it bad. He had yelled, she had yelled, shattering the glass of the boat house windows and causing her dad to look at her horrified.
Her.
It was one of the first times she realised her gifts might not be gifts at all...
And then she "pushed" that feeling of hurt/pain at her father.. Watched his face go from horrified to something twisted- something... evil... And he collapsed...
So she ran.
It was a blind flight to the ocean where she dove into the water and swam for the creatures who understood her the best. All the while putting a strangle hold on whatever that.. emotion thing was.. Never again would she let her emotions get that far out of control... At least, not by choice! She was swimming as hard as she could toward the whales...
When she next had a thought, she found herself in Eden.
